As a victim of the secularization of the Soviet government, the building completely became a museum in 1929. Since 1990, this building has been recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites along with the Kremlin and the Red Square.

It is said that the dreaded Ivan was so influenced by the architecture of the Cathedral of St. Basil, who ordered that his architect's eyes blind Niknikov be blinded so that he would no longer be able to construct a beautifully designed building until a rival of this structure.
